THE HEAD TEACHER GRADUATES: After studying in his spare time, as well as teaching and running the school, Morlai M Koroma has gained his BEd. His graduation ceremony took place in Freetown and was attended by David, Catherine and Michael.
THE GIRDLERS HELP THE CHILDREN’S READING: The Girdlers’ Company, one of the City of London’s Livery Companies, has recently donated further money to the David School Trust, and this is being used to introduce a reading scheme based on computer programs, which is designed to promote the understanding and speaking of English, as well as improving reading. This was trialed with two machines during the visit, with pupils aged 6+, and they loved it. It was so successful that it’s planned to purchase ten more computers plus headsets and software to expand the project. Scheme allows for individual work through a planned course with pupils’ success logged as a percentage, and it’s easy for teachers to spot areas needing attention. A new area for these computers was also prepared.
DOMINOES PROVE TO BE POPULAR: David introduced the pupils to dominoes. It’s good for number group recognition as well as a good social pastime when they have to use English, as well as being fun. The children really enjoyed it.
